Covid – 19: Update March 2021

West Harris Trust Camping will open on Thursday 29th April.
Please test before you travel.

To reduce the risk of COVID-19 being brought into island communities by people who are unaware they are infectious, the Scottish Government is encouraging anyone planning to travel to a Scottish island from Monday April 26, to test before they travel.
Rapid Flow Tests (LFT) can be ordered for delivery to your home anywhere in the UK and they should arrive within 24-48 hours.
Those travelling are asked to test three days before you plan to travel and then again on the day of departure. If you test positive, this would allow you to self-isolate and book a PCR test.
Pre-departure testing is intended for anyone travelling from the mainland, to capture travel from higher prevalence to lower prevalence areas. However with the expansion in the availability of LFTs to everyone in Scotland from Monday, anyone travelling to or from the islands is encouraged to test themselves, to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Please note that if your LFT result is negative, this is not a guarantee that you do not have COVID-19. You must continue to follow national and local restrictions, including FACTS guidance. If you develop COVID-19 symptoms, you must self-isolate and book a PCR test through your Health Board/Trust.
NHS Western Isles and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar would strongly encourage you to participate in this scheme in order to reduce the risk that you inadvertently carry coronavirus into one of our island communities.
To order tests before travel, visit:

If you do not have internet access you can book a test delivery by calling 0300 303 2713 (charged at your standard network rate).

We will continue to accept bookings subject to our terms and conditions.

Camping Spots

Camping Spots

There are currently five Trust camping spots in West Harris, located in Losgaintir (Luskentyre) and Seilebost (Shelibost). These spots offer fantastic views and are marked with a small sign. We are asking visitors to pay £5 per night at each spot. Caravans, campervans and tents are all welcome. As a charity we will invest all earnings back into community projects, including site maintenance. More information on the Trust and West Harris can be found in our leaflet, The Machair and Beaches of West Harris, copies of which are available at each camping spot.

Luskentyre

If you are already at one of the camping spots and would like to pay, please do so using the Paypal option below. Alternatively, you can post cash or cheque to us at this address.

Nights

Non-Trust camping can be found at Horgabost campsite, which has toilets and showers.

Directions

As you are coming south from Tarbert down the A859, the first spot will be on your left, in a large gravel parking area just past the ‘Welcome to West Harris’ sign. The area’s perimeter is marked by boulders and there is a small imitation standing stone. The spot, as with all other camping spots is clearly marked with a sign and leaflet holder. From here there is a view south over Luskentyre.

The second, third and fourth sites are in Luskentyre township. As you drive south on the A859, there will be a turning on your right for ‘Losgaintir’. A single track road leads through the township and dead-ends at a stunning beach. The camping spots are all in the initial half of the road, on the left hand side. All three have views over Luskentyre and easy access to the sand at low tide.

The fifth spot is back on the main road (A859) if you continue south. It is on the right hand side, in a small gravel parking area just before Seilebost causeway begins. This spot looks out over Luskentyre and Seilebost sands.

1st spot – room for 5+ vehicles
2nd, 3rd and 4th spot – room for 2 vehicles
5th spot – room for 3-4 vehicles
