Gàidhlig anns a' choimhearsnachd agus an Urras
Gaelic in the community and the Trust
Gaelic is a huge part of the West Harris community. Many of the population use the language every day and it is part of the rich history and heritage of the area. According to the 2011 census the Outer Hebrides had the highest concentration of those with some Gaelic skills at 61.2% with the next highest percentage at 7.4% in the Highland region.
The Trust recognises the importance of the language to the community and has worked to include it in the work it carries out. We aim to promote and preserve the language and increase its prominence in the everyday work of the Trust
Tha Gàidhlig glè chudromach airson coimhearsnachd taobh siar na Hearadh. Tha an cànan air a cleachdadh gu làitheil ann an iomadh dachaigh fhathast agus tha i na pàirt mòr dhen an eachdraidh agus an dualchas againn. Anns an cunntas-sluaigh 2011, bha sgilean Gàidhlig aig 61.2% dhen an àireamh sluaigh anns na h-eileanan, an àireamh as àirde ann an sgìrean na h-Alba, leis an ath àireamh as motha, 7.4%, ann an sgìre na Gàidhealtachd.
Tha an t-Urras ag aithneachadh gu bheil Gàidhlig uabhasach cudromach airson a’ choimhearsnachd agus tha iad ag amas air a’ chànan a bhrosnachadh anns an obair làitheil a tha iad a dèanamh.
Greis Gnìomhachais Oileanach Gàidhlig
Gaelic Student Placement
As part of the Trust's effort to promote the Gaelic language within the work of the Trust, a Gaelic student was hired for a ten week placement in the summer of 2022. As part of her role, she facilitated a programme of ten Gaelic lessons which were delivered over zoom as well as a series of Gaelic coffee mornings which provided the learners an opportunity to sit down with native speakers and chat about the history of the language and to answer any questions they may have had. It also allowed native speakers to share stories and reminisce about Harris in days gone by.
As an end of placement celebration, a ceilidh was organised to celebrate the culture and heritage that goes hand in hand with the language. This showcased local talent and provided a space where the language played a prominent role.
With thanks to Community Land Scotland and Bòrd na Gàidhlig for their funding and support with this project.
Mar phàirt dhen an amas Gàidhlig a bhrosnachadh anns an Urras, bha oileanach ag obair deich seachdainean air greis gnìomhachais Gàidhlig anns an t-samhradh 2022. Anns an obair seo, chuidich an t-oileanach le prògram de leasain Gàidhlig airson luchd-ionnsachaidh air Zoom. Airson cothrom a thighinn còmhla, bha cothroman còmhraidh gach cola-deug aig gach neach-labhairt ’s a’ Gàidhlig aig ìre sam bith. Thug e cothrom cuideachd do luchd-fileanta seann sgeulachdan a toirt seachad dha chèile.
Airson deireadh a’ ghreis gnìomhachais a chomharrachadh, chaidh ceilidh a chuir air dòigh. Bha seo a’ comharrachadh an cultar agus an dualchas beartach againn. Thug seo cothrom an tàlant ionadail a th’ againn a thaisbeanadh agus a bhith ann an àite far am bheil an cànan na phàirt cudromach.
Le taing do Fhearann Coimhearsnach na h-Alba agus Bòrd na Gàidhlig airson taic leis a’ phròiseact seo.
