Scaristavore
Sgarasta Mhòr
Traveling from the south, Scaristavore is the first village managed by the West Harris Trust.
Place name:
On maps pre-dating the first OS map parts of what we would now call Sgarasta Mhòr was called ‘Muckle Scarista’ and other parts in later OS maps included in Borve Mòr.
The ‘sta’ part of the word comes from the Norse for farm steading. The ’sgara’ part may come from a Norse word meaning a place where seagulls roost which is certainly accurate! 'Mhòr’ is the Gaelic for ‘big’.
